Social Justice in the News
- House Votes to Give ‘Dreamers’ a Path to Citizenship – New York Times. The U.S. House passed legislation to grant a path to citizenship to about 2.5 million immigrants whose legal protections President Trump has moved to end.
- Alabama Woman Who Was Shot While Pregnant Is Charged in Fetus’s Death – New York Times. Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when she was shot in the stomach. Yet it was her, not the shooter, who was charged with manslaughter.
- Austin City Council approves changes to ordinance that criminalizes panhandling, public camping – CBS Austin. Austin City Council voted to decriminalize soliciting, camping, sitting, or lying down in public areas. Austinites experiencing homelessness were the targets of these laws.
- Texas lawmaker files bill to allow donations of diapers, other goods to migrant kids in Border Patrol facilities – The Texas Tribune. A bill filed Friday by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, would allow Border Patrol to accept donations from those wanting to give to children at stations in Texas.
- Harris confronts Biden at Democratic debate on busing – MSNBC. Sen. Kamala Harris powerfully criticized former Vice President Joe Biden’s past record of ‘reaching across the aisle’ to segregationist U.S. Senators, and working against school busing programs, during the first Democratic debate.
- After removing a citizenship question on the 2020 census, the DOJ is trying to put it back on — at Trump’s request – Vox. The Supreme Court ruled the 2020 census can’t have a citizenship question. Trump says it can and will.
